Matariki star cluster with the stars named.

Thanks for the music!

In June, we hosted a music concert featuring the barbershop quartet, Block of Flats, and our good friend Robyn the Harper. Thanks to everyone who supported our fundraiser and helped us raise over $1,300.

Judith W. writes:

This was a real gem of a concert and we were treated to wonderful performances.
Robyn the Harper very thoughtfully wove Matariki into her performance,
which was so fitting given it is a time for coming together and reflection. Robyn has a beautifully calm presence that allows listeners to fully immerse themselves in the music she is creating from the harp and song. Each song was chosen to represent one of the Matariki stars. They were a variety of New Zealand folk songs and most I had never heard. It was a real treat to hear them sung by Robyn’s beautiful voice while also thinking about the meanings behind the stars and the songs.

Block of Flats entertained with a medley of harmonised a cappella
singing that can only come from a four-man barbershop quartet. The songs
ranged from modern to quite traditional songs and the performances were
interspersed with lovely stories about why they had chosen each song or bracket. The enjoyment of each man’s singing shone from his face. The
audience could feel the camaraderie within the group, not to mention the
humour and smiles they brought with them.

What is a concert without half-time and the delicious refreshments, so I
extend my thanks to all involved. I enjoyed myself so much so I went home singing myself!
A whakataukī I thought appropriate to what was created on the day:
Nau te rourou, naku te rourou, ka ora te manuhiri. With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive.
